En Route

It’s Thursday, about 2 PM. We boarded the Auto Train yesterday afternoon for an overnight ride from Sanford, FL to Lorton, VA. We suspected that there was a problem when we awoke at 4 AM to find that the train wasn’t moving. When we got up this morning we found out that a freight train [...]

Easter at the Beach

Rhea woke me up on Easter morning at about 6:30 to tell me there was a church service underway on the beach just in front of our motel room (Peter, Rhea’s brother, had gotten us the “best room in the house” for our Easter weekend visit). Sure enough, there were a couple of hundred people [...]

Naples (Florida, that is)

We left RI on Saturday, drove to DC, had a wonderful visit and went to Palm sunday at the Washington National Cathedral. 2500 + people, a beautiful service, but not THAT MUCH nicer than ours! We took the Auto Train to Orlando, then drove 4 hours ehre to Naples, where we’re visiting our friends Don [...]

Headin’ South

Tomorrow we leave again, this time down the East coast. We drive to Pottstown, Pa. to visit Rhea’s sister, then on to DC on Saturday, where we’ll see our friend Catherine Bear, go to Palm Sunday services (probably at the National Cathedral  http://www.cathedral.org/), then load on the Auto Train in Virginia for an overnight trip [...]

Home

We traveled all told 24 hours yesterday. We were up at 6 AM Amman time (11 PM Friday night here in RI) and finally arrived home in Little Compton at 11 PM EST. Oops, time to spring forward to midnight! We’ll unpack and organize in the next few days, and I’ll try to make sense [...]

Jerusalem

Yesterday we were in Tulkarum and Nablus in the West Bank. Last night we returned here. After dinner we learned about the killing og 8 yeshicve students in Jerusalem. Today, to my surprise, with the exception of increases security forces (5000?), life goes on pretty much as usual. I just finished meeting personally with Naim [...]

Nazareth and the Galilee

This is where Jesus grew up, a mountain town of 70,000 today with views that, as Rhea says, Americans would DIE for. This area is in Israel, so the situation for Palestinians is slightly different from those who live in the West Bank, or Occupied Territories. Nazarath is a Palestinian town, but the government has confiscated [...]

Nazareth

Another amazing day. We went first to Taybeh (Ephraim), in Samaria, the place where Jesus stopped to rest and pray on his way to Jerusalem (John 11). This is the only totally (98%) Christian village in Palestine, with 1400 residents. As is always the case, it is ringed by Israeli settlements. As a measure of [...]
